The map was included in Cartes generales de toutes les parties du monde published by Nicolas Sanson in 1658. Sanson adopted azimuthal equidistance projection, so the northern region was significantly widened and the Korean Peninsula appears as a strangely oblique and long shape. At the bottom right hand of the map was depicted an angel with trombone in hand, below which there is a box with Sanson’s notes. The notes reveal that Sanson referred to the Chinese geographic data of Ruggieri and Martini. Therefore, this map is more accurate compared with Sanson’s Chinese map published in 1652. The positions of China’s provinces have all been corrected and the tributaries of the river system were enriched on the map. Many mountains and lakes were added. The details of coastline are also more exhaustive and realistic. There are many differences in the place names of the two maps by Sanson, which provides a basis for the research of place names and their pronunciations at that time. Notably, Samson refused to copy from Martini’s Novus Atlas Sinensis in 1655. Compared with Martini’s map, Samson’s Chinese map improved in such ways as the province TVNGKING ceased to be on the west of Guangdong. Islands of various sizes and shapes were portrayed in the Pearl River Estuary, among which the only island painted with building is Macau. The name “Macao” was marked on a larger island north of that island. The Cross Gate and the large and small Hengqin islands around Macau are faintly discernable. Not Only Canton (CANTAM o' QVAMCEV FV.)is depicted to the North of Macao but also its building is depicted in detail.
This map is copied from the single map “La Chine Royaume” collected in Harvard University Library. (G7820 1656 .S2)
